A2P Messaging

Messaging

Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging is the process of sending messages from a software application to a mobile user. Unlike person-to-person (P2P) texts, A2P messages are generated programmatically — for example, OTP codes, appointment reminders, shipping notifications, and marketing campaigns. A2P traffic is the dominant revenue stream for most CPaaS providers and is subject to carrier-specific regulations and filtering.

Why it matters: operators price, route and filter A2P traffic differently from person-to-person messages, which is why business messaging is bought through a provider rather than a phone contract.

How an A2P message reaches a phone

A business system hands the message to a provider over an API or SMPP connection. The provider picks a route to the recipient’s operator, the operator delivers it to the handset, and a delivery receipt travels back the same way so the sender knows what arrived.
